Z ARCHIVE Metro - I-94 in Minneapolis: 2024-2025 construction
If you are making plans for the upcoming weekend, make sure it includes extra travel time to navigate around a full closure of eastbound I-94 in Minneapolis. Also, watch for fewer lanes on westbound I-94 and several ramp closures. The closures are needed to shift traffic within the work zone as bridge maintenance work resumes along I-94 in Minneapolis.
Starting 9 p.m. tomorrow, April 4 the following I-94 ramps will be closed:
- Northbound I-35W to eastbound I-94 will be closed until 5 a.m. Mon, April 7
- Detour: Northbound I-35W, eastbound Hwy 36, southbound I-35E and eastbound I-94
- South 6th St. to eastbound I-94 will be closed until late April
- Detour: Northbound 11th Ave. South, eastbound Washington Ave. South, southbound Cedar Ave. and eastbound I-94
- Huron Blvd. to eastbound I-94 will be closed through June
- Detour: Eastbound University Ave. Southeast, southbound North Eustis St., eastbound Franklin Ave. and eastbound I-94
- Huron Blvd. to westbound I-94 will be closed through June
- Detour: Westbound University Ave. Southeast, northbound Southeast Oak St., westbound Southeast 4th St., southbound I-35W and westbound I-94
Then beginning at 10 p.m. tomorrow, April 4, eastbound I-94 will be fully closed, and westbound I-94 will be reduced to three lanes between 11th Ave. South and Franklin Ave. Southeast.
Westbound I-94 will be further reduced to two lanes by 6 a.m. Sun, April 6 to allow crews to repaint the pavement markings.
Finally, beginning 3 p.m. Sun, April 6, westbound I-94 will be reduced to a single lane to shift traffic and the following ramps will be closed:
- Westbound I-94 to South 7th St. will be closed until Sat, May 17
- Detour: Westbound I-94, northbound Cedar Ave., westbound Washington Ave. South, southbound 11th Ave. South and South 7th St.
- Westbound I-94 to Riverside Ave. will be closed through June
- Detour: Westbound I-94, northbound Cedar Ave. and Riverside Ave.
- Riverside Ave./Butler Pl. South to westbound I-94 will be closed through June
- Detour: Southbound 25th Ave. South, westbound East Franklin Ave., southbound Cedar Ave., northbound Hwy 55 and westbound I-94
By 5 a.m. Mon, April 7, eastbound I-94 will reopen however, both directions of I-94 will be reduced to two lanes between I-35W and Huron Blvd. through June.
The traffic shift is necessary to allow crews to complete bridge maintenance work along westbound I-94.

All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule permitting and subject to change.
Please drive with care in work zones:
- Slow down when approaching every work zone, then navigate with care and caution.
- Stay alert; work zones constantly change.
- Watch for workers and slow-moving equipment.
- Obey posted speed limits. The fine for a violation in a work zone is $300.
- Minimize distractions behind the wheel.
- Be patient; expect delays, especially during peak travel times.

We are doing maintenance and repair work on five bridges along I-94 in Minneapolis. These bridges include:
- I-94 bridge (Dartmouth Bridge) that spans the Mississippi River
- Riverside Ave. bridge over I-94
- I-94 over Cedar Ave.
- I-94 over the Light Rail Transit (Blue Line)
- I-94 over Hwy 55/Hiawatha Ave.
When construction is completed, five bridges along I-94 will have a smoother and safer riding surface. Construction began in October 2024 and is anticipated to be complete in November 2025.
