D6 - I-90 Austin bridge replacements: 2024-2026 construction
15-minute stops planned 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Take note if you travel Interstate 90 in Austin Thursday night into Friday morning!
Motorists on Interstate 90 near the Cedar River in Austin will experience brief traffic stoppages from 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 24 to 6 a.m., Friday, Oct. 25 as crews deliver and place beams on the eastbound Cedar River bridge.
I-90 traffic in both directions will be stopped for approximately 15 minutes each time a beam is delivered at the construction site just east of the Fourth Street Northwest interchange.
How it works:
- Traffic will be stopped by law enforcement in each direction on I-90 when a truck delivering a beam arrives in the eastbound lane.
- The truck will stop and allow cranes to attach and lift the beam into place over the river.
- Once the beam is removed from the truck, the truck will depart, and traffic will resume until the next delivery.
- Nine beams will be delivered and set overnight.
Bridge beam setting last week for the first of three bridge spans over the Cedar River. Span two is scheduled to be set on Oct. 24.
What comes next:
- After the center span beams are set on Thursday, crews will be setting beams on the west side next month, which will complete the three spans of the bridge over the river.
- The eastbound Cedar River bridge is expected to be completed this season and will reopen to traffic in the coming months.
- Crews will return in spring 2025 to replace the westbound I-90 Cedar River bridge.
- The next step in the three-year project is the demolition of the Fourth Street Northwest bridge, which is expected to occur in early November.
- Later this month, MnDOT will announce traffic detour routes during the Fourth Street bridge demolition, and during the construction of the new bridge. Construction at Fourth Street is expected to run through winter and into November 2025.
Much more work is planned in this project at six sites along I-90 in Austin. Encourage others to sign up for these timely email updates by forwarding them this email and have them click the link to sign up.
