Hwy 59 reopens in Pelican Rapids!
The big news of the week is that Highway 59 through downtown Pelican Rapids up to Fifth Avenue NE has been reopened to all traffic! BIG thank you to the business community for their patience throughout this construction season. Your cooperation is what made this year's progress so successful!
There's still work to do on Highway 59 next year, north of Fifth Avenue NE. That work will be done under traffic, one side at a time, with an automated signal system directing traffic through the work zone. This section will be a top priority for the crews in 2025, so we expect it'll be one of the first things they tackle when the weather allows in the spring. More info to come about next year's schedule and staging on Highway 59, Highway 108 east and west as we get closer to construction starting back up in 2025!
Highway 59 is now open downtown up to Fifth Ave NE!
Week 27 construction progress
With Highway 59 now back open to traffic and both roundabouts operational, be alert for workers who may be along the roadside finishing up final touches.
Work on Highway 108 east, in Stage 4A, continues too. Curb and gutter have been installed, and concrete crews are now pouring sidewalks. Weather permitting, paving is expected to take place at the end of next week. We expect this section to reopen in the upcoming weeks!
As a reminder, please DO NOT drive or walk around barriers, ribbons or cones. Your cooperation is important. Remain alert as there may be some access restrictions while concrete is curing.
Over on the west side of town, along Highway 108 west, crews are making progress on the trail. They are grading and expect to begin concrete paving the trail next week, weather permitting. As they work in this area, there should be minimal impacts to traffic, but there may be shoulder closures where crews are working. Please give them plenty of space to work, as they'll be out there until the ground freezes and weather pauses progress.
Curb, gutter and sidewalks are being installed along Highway 108 east.

Final in-person update for 2024 season next week
With year one construction wrapping up, our weekly Wednesday meetings at the Pelican Rapids Public Library from noon to 12:30 p.m., will also come to an end. Wednesday, Oct. 23 will be our final noon meeting for 2024. We'll offer in-person updates again in 2025 before/when construction begins. The frequency of those meetings next year is still to be determined, depending on continued interest and attendance.
If you have a question about the project, but can't make it next week, please call the project Helpline 218-517-9848 at any time.
When construction progress pauses for the winter, these weekly email updates will take a pause too. But don't worry, you'll get updates straight to your inbox again next year! Please encourage your neighbors, family and friends to visit the project website to sign up for the email list so they can also stay informed about year two work!
As a reminder, there are several different ways you can find information or get your questions answered:
All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather dependent and subject to change. MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones where workers are present, and never enter an area that's blocked by barriers or cones.
