Z ARCHIVE D3 - Hwy 169 & Hwy 210 Aitkin to north of Hassman: 2023–2024 construction
As we work towards the final month of construction and detours, we thought we'd share an update with some progress pictures.
Reconstruct Hassman intersection
Last week, crews began to reconstruct the Hwy 169 and 210 intersection at Hassman. They removed the existing concrete to reconstruct the free-right turn lane and replace the final drainage pipe on the project.
Once the intersection work is complete, Hwy 169/210 will remain closed and detoured between Aitkin and Hassman through late October.
What is unbonded concrete overlay?
This Hwy 169 project uses a surface process known as an unbonded concrete overlay, which will repair and strengthen the road surface long-term. It consists of three layers:

Existing concrete layer
First, cracks and other imperfections are patched or repaired.
Interlayer
Next, asphalt is paved over the existing layer, as shown in the image below. This interlayer serves as a bond breaker to prevent cracks on the existing concrete layer from transferring to the new concrete layer.
New concrete layer
Then, seven to 10 inches of new concrete is paved over the interlayer and a curing compound is applied to the new textured concrete surface. Crews plan to pave the new layer of concrete the week of Sept. 16 starting on the north end at the Hwy 169 and 210 intersection.
Work zone reminders
Hwy 169 remains closed and detoured to through traffic using Hwy 210 to Co. Rd. 5 (Nature Ave.) Palisade and Co. Rd. 3 (480th St.), back to Hwy 169 north of the Mississippi River. Access will continue to be open and maintained for those who live, work or visit areas within the closed work zone, but expect changes, gravel or grooved road surfaces, flaggers with periodic stops and alternate one-way traffic. Please slow down, follow construction signs and stay out of barricaded areas.

When complete in late October, travelers will benefit from a wider, smoother and stronger road surface; improved safety, access and traffic flow; and updated drainage.
