Crews are wrapping up in Stages 1A and 1B, on Highway 59 south of the Highway 108 east/W Mill intersection. We're getting so close to reopening this section to traffic, and appreciate your patience as we finish up the final steps.
Week 16 construction progress
North of the bridge, in Stage 1C, crews are currently installing storm sewer on Highway 59 downtown. Remember: businesses are open! Business access is being maintained, but please check in with your destination on the best way to get to them. To access businesses on the northeast side of town, please use Fifth Avenue NE.
On the south side of the project, the mainline paving is completed! Paving crews are still on-site paving parking lots and buttoning up their work. Although the road looks ready, final striping and sign installation needs to be completed before the road can fully reopen. Seeding is also underway in those areas.
Weather permitting, for 1-2 days next week, the roundabout at Highway 108 east/W Mill will close to traffic so final striping can be completed in the roundabout. When the roundabout closes, motorists traveling to/from Highway 108 east will be temporarily detoured to First Street SE and Fifth Avenue. Once striping is done and weather permitting, by the end of next week, Highway 59 is expected to reopen to all traffic south of the Highway 108 east/W Mill intersection!
The contractor has proposed changes to the 2024-2025 construction staging. The proposal includes starting work on Highway 108 east this year (Stages 4A-C), beginning late August. Crews will also complete the current stages that are under construction on Highway 59 up to Fifth Avenue NE (Stages 1C and 2A), but will leave the remaining work on Highway 59 north of Fifth Avenue NE (Stage 2B) until 2025. Crews may work on the County Road 9 realignment (Stage 2C) this year as well, but that is still to be determined.
The contractor proposes that this staging change will help them to maintain consistent progress on the more than 20+ blocks of city utility replacements and gives them better options for stopping points if winter arrives early.
We apologize for any inconvenience this change causes. More information regarding start dates and detour routes will be shared in the upcoming weeks.

Join us weekly on Wednesdays for in-person updates!
You can join us at the Pelican Rapids Public Library each Wednesday, noon to 12:30 p.m., for weekly in-person construction updates. Business liaison Brent Frazier, and representatives from MnDOT and Landwehr Construction will be there to share updates and answer questions!
*Meetings are subject to change based on interest and attendance.
View the recordings of the weekly public meetings on the library's Youtube page. Due to the set up of the room and number of attendees, audio is tricky so we appreciate your patience with the recordings' sound.
If you have a question about the project, but can't make it to the weekly meetings, please call the project Helpline 218-517-9848 at any time.
Safety & detour reminders
We have detour routes set up for every type of road user. Trucks and thru-traffic should follow the signed routes out of town, city residents and visitors can follow the in-town detour route, and if you are walking, biking or rolling through town, please follow the signed pedestrian routes. We know it may be inconvenient at times, and you may need to walk a block or two out of the way to get around, but your cooperation is important for your safety.
Pelican Rapids businesses are OPEN during construction, so follow the various detours to best navigate around the work zone and stop in to support them! To access businesses on the northeast side of town, please use Fifth Avenue NE.
If you don't have a destination in Pelican Rapids and want to avoid backups, we advise using the thru-traffic/truck routes out of town to get to the lakes or other destinations. See the thru-traffic map at top of the email for the thru-traffic route options, depending on your direction of travel.
