D3 - I-94 Gap – Albertville to Monticello: 2024 -2026 construction
Expect changes, lane closures
Work on the three-year expansion of I-94 between Albertville and Monticello, known as the I-94 Gap project, will get underway Monday evening, July 22.
Overall, crews will prepare the work zone, which includes temporary lane widening and median crossovers. I-94 will be reduced to one lane in both directions at off-peak hours, mainly overnights between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. Expect reduced speeds and lane shifts.
Off-road work to occur at anytime during the full duration of this project.
We apologize for the noise July 22–23
On Monday evening, crews will saw cut segments of road surface, which does run on the loud side. Saw cutting will be one of the louder noises heard along I-94 and we apologize in advance. The operation is necessary and the contractor hopes it will take only one night. This work cannot be completed during the day due to location and traffic volumes.
Residents may also hear and see trucks and equipment running each night as we progress through the project this season.
All lanes will be open—two lanes, each direction over the 2024–2025 winter season.
Major construction will take place spring 2025—fall 2026. Overall, I-94 will remain open to two lanes, each direction, on one side of the interstate as crews construct the adjacent side.
Schedule and work is subject to change.

- Replace the westbound bridge over Co. Rd. 19 in Albertville
- Widen the westbound bridge over Co. Rd. 75 in Monticello
- Install two noise walls along I-94 in the Monticello area:
- South side of EB I-94 east of Wright Co. Rd. 18/Fenning Ave.
- North side of WB I-94, east of Broadway St.
- Replace or repair underground drainage structures
Work zone safety tips
Slow down and drive with caution
Drivers traveling too fast and not paying attention are the main causes of work zone crashes. Follow these safe driving tips:
- Obey posted speed limits. The fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
- Drive undistracted. Avoid using phones, mobile devices, adjusting the radio – even eating – while in work zones.
- Be patient. Expect delays, especially at peak travel times.
- Do the zipper merge. Take turns at the merge point.
- Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
- Expect work zones to constantly change. Day to day you could experience lane shifts, closures, narrower lanes, moving workers and vehicles.

When all six lanes open in fall 2026, the project will provide a smoother ride, extend the life of interstate, improve freight access, increase capacity and reduce bottle necks, address area growth and improve motorist safety along I-94 Albertville and Monticello.
