Flooded Roads
Excessive rainfall has caused some roads to flood. This included portions of I-90 in Austin and Hwy 63 at Spring Valley. The maintenance teams are closing roads as needed. They will reopen sections as water recedes and a safety inspection is done.
There is an increased risk of mudslides along the Mississippi River Valley. Motorists are advised to use caution and be alert for changing road conditions.
Drivers are encouraged to use 511mn.org for the latest information.
Additional rainfall and severe weather is expected today. Conditions may change quickly. People should monitor the forecast from their local National Weather Service office.
 Travel tips
- Expect the unexpected – flash floods can occur anytime, anywhere.
- Do not drive around barricades or into flooded areas. Most flooding deaths occur in vehicles.
- Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control and possible stalling. A foot of water will float many vehicles. Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles including sport utility vehicles and pick-ups.
- When a road is closed it is illegal to travel in that area. Motorists can be fined up to $1,000 and/or 90 days in jail. If travelers need to be rescued from a closed road, other expenses and penalties will also apply.
