Starting Tuesday, June 25, crews will begin work north of the Pelican River bridge and Highway 59 will close south of Third Avenue NW. This includes closure of the Highway 59 and Highway 108 west intersection!
The in-town detour on First Avenue SW will extend north across Highway 108 to Third Avenue NW. A new thru-traffic detour on Highway 34 and County Road 113 will also be installed. We are making updates to the detour maps and will share them when they're ready. Thanks for your patience.
Week 10 construction progress
It was another rainy week, but crews have still been working hard on Stages 1A and 1B. Underground utilities are now complete up to Fourth Avenue, so concrete crews will begin curb and gutter and sidewalks south of the roundabout in Stage 1A. Utility replacements continue in front of the school in Stage 1B, which they are hoping - weather permitting - to finish up within the next week or so.
Once the utility work is completed, then concrete crews can continue south to install curb and gutter and sidewalks—all in time for paving in mid-July (likely after Pelican Fest).
Also this week, bridge crews returned to pour the bridge deck overlay!
On Tuesday, June 25, if weather cooperates, pavement removals and utility replacements will start in Stage 1C, which is the section north of the Pelican River bridge through the Highway 59/Highway 108 intersection up to Third Avenue NW. We appreciate the community's patience during this staging overlap to allow progress to continue downtown.
Reminder to pedestrians and motorists: Disturbed concrete will have to be removed and re-installed. Please help us keep things moving by being alert and cautious, and never enter an area blocked by tape/ribbon, barriers or cones. Your cooperation is important! Thank you!!
South of the roundabout, Stage 1A utility work is done and ready for concrete!

Join us weekly on Wednesdays for in-person updates!
You can join us at the Pelican Rapids Public Library each Wednesday, noon to 12:30 p.m., for weekly in-person construction updates. Business liaison Brent Frazier, and representatives from MnDOT and Landwehr Construction will be there to share updates and answer questions!
*Meetings are subject to change based on interest and attendance.
View the recordings of the weekly public meetings on the library's Youtube page. Due to the set up of the room and number of attendees, audio is tricky so we appreciate your patience with the recordings' sound.
If you have a question about the project, but can't make it to the weekly meetings, please call the project Helpline 218-517-9848 at any time.
Safety & detour reminders
We have detour routes set up for every type of road user. Trucks and thru-traffic should follow the signed routes out of town, city residents and visitors can follow the in-town detour route, and if you are walking, biking or rolling through town, please follow the signed pedestrian routes. We know it may be inconvenient at times, and you may need to walk a block or two out of the way to get around, but your cooperation is important for your safety.
Pelican Rapids businesses are OPEN during construction, so follow the various detours to best navigate around the work zone and stop in to support them!
If you don't have a destination in Pelican Rapids and want to avoid backups, we advise using the thru-traffic/truck routes out of town to get to the lakes or other destinations. See the map for the thru-traffic route options, depending on your direction of travel.
