June has been a busy month for crews on the 11th Street underpass project! The rain has been both a blessing and curse for the multiple operations taking place throughout the work zone, and progress continues on the shoofly construction, lift station and outfall structure.
A reminder for your Fourth of July travel plans to check 511mn.org for statewide traffic impacts. The 11th Street underpass project is just one of many road construction projects happening across Minnesota. Before you go, check the 511 map to see where you may encounter work zones, detours and more. Always slow down in work zones (even when workers aren't present) and never enter an area blocked by barriers or cones.
Railroad crews install track along Hillsboro shoofly
Progress and upcoming work
Currently, railroad crews are on-site constructing the track for the Hillsboro line shoofly—they expect to switch trains over to the temporary track mid to end of July. A shoofly is the temporary railroad bypass, which will move trains off of the main track while crews work underneath it to begin building the underpasses.
For the KO line, crews continue to prepare the site for shoofly construction. They are grading in this area, which will help to create a strong base for the temporary tracks. Once that work is done, railroad crews will return to construct the KO line shoofly.
On the northwest side of the project in Memorial/W.H. Davy Park, there are now walls at the outfall structure, which is an important part of the storm sewer system that outfalls to the Red River. During the week of July 8, crews will begin installing pipe in this area. During that work, there will be additional restrictions in the park for about a week, including closure of portions of the walking path near the river.
At the future lift station, near the corner of 11th Street and First Avenue, crews are about finished installing piling. From there, crews will begin excavations and pour the pad, then work their way up by building the walls.
Separate from this project but still close to our work zone, during the week of July 15, weather permitting, the railroad will close the crossing at 7th Street to make repairs. They expect the work to take approximately one week.
Other reminders
-
Join us in-person monthly, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., for "Coffee & Construction" at Moorhead's Hjemkomst Center, located at 202 1st Ave N. Next meeting is July 11!
-
Train horns have resumed in the Downtown Quiet Zone during construction hours (Monday - Friday, 6am - 7pm). This is a requirement of the railroad, and we appreciate your understanding as worker safety is prioritized.
-
Moorhead businesses are open during construction! If your destination falls within/near the work zone or along the detour routes, please check in with the business to determine the best route there.
-
Never enter an area that's blocked by barriers or cones. It is not safe to drive, walk or bike around barricades, even in areas where workers aren't present or active. Those boundaries are set up for your safety. There are signed detours installed for both motorists and pedestrians. Please use those routes.
-
There may be other projects in Moorhead that could affect your travel routes, so please check in with the City of Moorhead for plans and impacts. Visit their website or follow the City of Moorhead on Facebook.
