Effective Monday, June 10, weather permitting, the in-town detour will switch as crews move into Stage 1B in front of the high school!! The Highway 59 closure will extend through Fifth Avenue, and east/west traffic will begin using Highway 108/W Mill to cross Highway 59 at the new roundabout!
Keep in mind, the Highway 59/Highway 108 intersection will only be used for cross street traffic—the north and south legs of the roundabout will remain closed while Stage 1A concrete work and utility replacements also continue.
For those who are traveling north and south in-town, the detour route will be adjusted south to First Street SW and 10th Avenue SW. You will no longer be able to access Highway 59 from Fifth Avenue.
All work, schedules and detour changes are, of course, weather permitting. As with any changes made to existing traffic patterns, we appreciate your patience and cooperation as you and other motorists and pedestrians get used to the new routes.

Week 8 construction progress
With concrete paving completed at the roundabout last Friday, crews have been performing the finishing touches this week before the intersection can be reopened on Monday for cross street traffic. That means cleaning up debris and sealing the concrete.
Further south, utility replacements are still underway between Second and Fourth Avenues, and on Monday, they'll begin pavement removals in Stage 1B to begin working on utilities in that section too. The rainy weather definitely makes dirt work challenging, so we are all hoping for sunnier days ahead to help keep things progressing.
Concrete crews have also started pouring sidewalks this week in Stage 1A, and that work will continue through next week too. Bridge crews will be back on-site to pour the approach panels and bridge deck as well. Please note: there may be some additional short-term daily closures north of the bridge to accommodate the equipment and trucks needed for those pours.
Reminder to those visiting downtown: Disturbed concrete will have to be removed and re-installed. Please help us keep things moving by being alert and cautious, and never enter an area blocked by tape/ribbon, barriers or cones. Your cooperation is important! Thank you!!

Safety & detour reminders
We have detour routes set up for every type of road user. Trucks and thru-traffic should follow the signed routes out of town, city residents and visitors can follow the in-town detour route, and if you are walking, biking or rolling through town, please follow the signed pedestrian routes. We know it may be inconvenient at times, and you may need to walk a block or two out of the way to get around, but your cooperation is important for your safety.
Pelican Rapids businesses are OPEN during construction, so follow the various detours to best navigate around the work zone and stop in to support them!
If you don't have a destination in Pelican Rapids and want to avoid backups, we advise using the thru-traffic/truck routes out of town to get to the lakes or other destinations. See the map for the thru-traffic route options, depending on your direction of travel.
