When the rain stays away, the concrete crews will work all day! That's the game plan, at least, for the next two weeks as concrete crews began work this week as the forecast allowed.
Reminder regarding concrete: your cooperation and patience in the work zone is more important than ever! Do not walk, bike, roll, step or touch any concrete that's blocked off by tape/ribbons, barriers, cones, etc. Disturbed concrete will have to be removed and re-installed, so please help us keep things moving by being alert and cautious. Thank you!!
Memorial Day weekend travel
You won't see crews working this weekend. They'll pause for the holiday weekend and resume on Tuesday. The work zone will remain in place, though, so please do not enter any areas that are blocked by barriers or cones.
If you're visiting Pelican Rapids, expect delays on the in-town route while extra visitors and travelers pass through. Downtown businesses are OPEN so please stop in to support them!
If you don't have a destination in Pelican Rapids and want to avoid backups, we advise using the thru-traffic/truck routes out of town to get to the lakes or other destinations. See the map for the thru-traffic route options, depending on your direction of travel.
This week's construction progress
Concrete is the main player this week and next week, as concrete crews have moved into the intersection of Highway 59 and Highway 108 east. They have installed all four quadrants of curb of the roundabout, and have started on the center medians too. Weather permitting, they expect to begin paving next week! You'll also see bridge crews on-site to pour the approach panels, center median and sidewalks at the bridge—weather permitting, of course!
Further south, underground utility work has paused due to the wet conditions. Crews will resume utility replacements next week in Stage 1A. We should know by this time next week, too, when crews will move into Stage 1B (Fourth to Fifth Avenue, in front of the school).
We appreciate your patience as we work through the weather challenges and do our best to keep to the schedule!
Before! MnDOT survey crews mark out the location of the south leg center median.
After! Colored concrete has been installed in the south leg center median.
- Utility replacements between the Pelican River bridge and Second Avenue
- Bridge prep work for concrete
- Finish curb, gutter and center medians at the Highway 59/Highway 108 east intersection for roundabout
- Finish utility replacements between Second Avenue and Fourth Avenue
- Concrete paving of the Highway 59/Highway 108 east roundabout
- Pour the bridge approach panels and other concrete work at the bridge
Safety & detour reminders
We have detour routes set up for every type of road user. Trucks and thru-traffic should follow the signed routes out of town, city residents and visitors can follow the in-town detour route (see map), and if you are walking, biking or rolling through town, please follow the signed pedestrian routes. We know it may be inconvenient at times, and you may need to walk a block or two out of the way to get around, but your cooperation is important for your safety.
Pelican Rapids businesses are OPEN during construction, so follow the various detours to best navigate around the work zone and stop in to support them!

Weekly in-person updates
Join us at the Pelican Rapids Public Library each Wednesday, noon to 12:30 p.m., for weekly in-person construction updates. Business liaison Brent Frazier, and representatives from MnDOT and Landwehr Construction will be there to share updates and answer questions!
*Meetings are subject to change based on interest and attendance.
View the recordings of the weekly public meetings on the library's Youtube page. We'll link to the most recent recording each week on our project website. Due to the set up of the room and number of attendees, audio is tricky so we appreciate your patience with the recordings' sound.
If you have a question about the project, but can't make it to the weekly meetings, please call the project Helpline 218-517-9848 at any time.
Signing up for this project email list is just one way to stay informed during construction. There are several different ways you can find information or get your questions answered:

- The city has set up cameras in downtown Pelican Rapids, so you can check in on the construction progress live! Go to the Pelican Rapids city website for links to the cameras.
All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather dependent and subject to change. MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones where workers are present, and never enter an area that's blocked by barriers or cones.
