Work on the 11th Street underpass will pause for the Memorial Day weekend, and crews will resume work, weather permitting, on Tuesday!
A reminder for any weekend travel plans to check 511mn.org for statewide traffic impacts. The 11th Street underpass project is just one of many road construction projects happening across Minnesota. Before you go, check the 511 map to see where you may encounter work zones, detours and more. Always slow down in work zones (even when workers aren't present) and never enter an area blocked by barriers or cones.
Current work and happenings
There have been a few adjustments to the weekly workplans due to the wet conditions from the rain, but crews are still make progress where they can!
Building demolition continues throughout the project area. Silver lining of the rain: it helps to manage the dust at the demo sites. Expect restrictions in the areas immediately surrounding the demolitions—such as no parking or temporary lane closures.
At both railroad crossings on 11th Street, crews continue to prepare each site for shoofly construction. A shoofly is the temporary railroad bypass, which will move trains off of the main track while crews work underneath it to begin building the underpasses. Crews are first building up the area underneath where the shoofly will be constructed, ensuring there's a strong base for the temporary track. They must also make sure the areas properly drain water, so drainage ditches are built too. In early June, railroad crews are scheduled to be on-site to begin constructing the Hillsboro line shoofly, then the KO line once that area is prepped too.
On Eighth Street, north of First Avenue, crews have poured the foundation of the outfall structure in the park, an important part of the storm sewer system, which outfalls to the Red River.
And in the northwest corner of 11th Street and First Avenue, crews have started work on the lift station. Those who live or work near this location can expect to hear loud noises and vibrations for several weeks as crews continue to install sheet piling and shoring.
Other reminders

Join us in-person monthly, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., for "Coffee & Construction" at Moorhead's Hjemkomst Center, located at 202 1st Ave N. Next meeting is June 6!
-
Train horns have resumed in the Downtown Quiet Zone during construction hours (Monday - Friday, 6am - 7pm). This is a requirement of the railroad, and we appreciate your understanding as worker safety is prioritized.
-
Moorhead businesses are open during construction! If your destination falls within/near the work zone or along the detour routes, please check in with the business to determine the best route there.
-
Never enter an area that's blocked by barriers or cones. It is not safe to drive, walk or bike around barricades, even in areas where workers aren't present or active. Those boundaries are set up for your safety. There are signed detours installed for both motorists and pedestrians. Please use those routes.
-
There may be other projects in Moorhead that could affect your travel routes, so please check in with the City of Moorhead for plans and impacts. Visit their website or follow the City of Moorhead on Facebook.
