It's fishing opener in Minnesota this weekend, and we know many anglers will be traveling through Otter Tail County and Pelican Rapids. Expect delays on the in-town route while extra visitors pass through (and hopefully stop into the local stores to buy their last-minute Mother's Day gifts, too!).
If you don't have a destination in Pelican Rapids and want to avoid backups, we advise using the thru-traffic/truck routes out of town to get to the lakes or other destinations. See the map for the thru-traffic route options, depending on your direction of travel.
This week's construction progress
With underground utilities in place from the bridge to First Avenue, crews have started grading the intersection of Highway 59 and Highway 108 east. This work is in preparation for concrete crews, who are expected to arrive next week to begin concrete work in Stage 1A which includes the first roundabout! It'll be an exciting next few weeks to see things begin to take shape as they install curb and gutter, sidewalks and concrete paving.
Work on underground utilities continue south, between First Avenue and Third Avenue. At the bridge, crews are also prepping the roadway for concrete crews to pour the bridge approach panels.

Utility work continues south of First Avenue.
- Utility replacements between the bridge and First Avenue.
- Coring and storm sewer outlets at the bridge
- Continue utility replacements between First Avenue and Third Avenue
- Continue grading at the Highway 59/Highway 108 east intersection
- Continue grading on the north and south sides of the bridge
- Concrete crews arrive next week!
Safety & detour reminders
We have detour routes set up for every type of road user. Trucks and thru-traffic should follow the signed routes out of town, city residents and visitors can follow the in-town detour route (see map), and if you are walking, biking or rolling through town, please follow the signed pedestrian routes. We know it may be inconvenient at times, and you may need to walk a block or two out of the way to get around, but your cooperation is important for your safety.
Pelican Rapids businesses are OPEN during construction, so follow the various detours to best navigate around the work zone and stop in to support them!
