Week two of road construction on Highway 59 in Pelican Rapids in coming to a close! Crews wrapped up work today, and will return on Monday, April 29, weather permitting. We do expect the rainy weather over the next several days could delay some scheduled work, but crews won't be slowing down, you'll see them out working as the weather allows.
This week's progress
If you've taken a peek at the Stage 1A downtown work zone - whether you've watched from the roadside or viewed the live cameras on the City of Pelican Rapids website - this week's work zone views showed big equipment digging and moving dirt. Underground utility replacements continue. Crews have finished installing the water main through the Highway 108 east intersection, and next week will begin tying in private services. Pending weather delays, crews hope to finish up all utility services through the Highway 108 east intersection by the end of next week. Utility replacements will then continue south, and concrete crews will move into the Highway 59/Highway 108 intersection to begin work on the roundabout.
You'll notice with each service being installed, they work from the bridge out—that's because every system leads back toward the bridge. This week, bridge crews started coring the holes that will serve as outlets for the storm sewer system.
And lastly, another big change this week was paving of the in-town detour route. We appreciate your patience as we made those adjustments. Traffic is now running in both directions on Great Northern Road.
Crews replace underground city utilities, installing new water main, sewer and storm sewer systems in downtown Pelican Rapids
Crews core the storm sewer outlet on the north side of the bridge, while utility work continues to the south.

Safety reminders
We have detour routes set up for every type of road user. Trucks and thru-traffic should follow the signed routes out of town, city residents and visitors can follow the in-town detour route (see map), and if you are walking, biking or rolling through town, please follow the signed pedestrian routes. We know it may be inconvenient at times, and you may need to walk a block or two out of the way to get around, but your cooperation is important for your safety.
Pelican Rapids businesses are OPEN during construction, so follow the various detours to best navigate around the work zone and stop in to support them!
