Planet satellite imagery
By Mike Dolbow
GIS Bytes on 3/19/2024.
Planet.com is a satellite imagery company with a mission to image the Earth’s landmass every day and make global change accessible and actionable. In the webinar, the Planet team will introduce their products, explain several use cases pertinent to state government, and briefly demonstrate integrations with products like ArcGIS Pro.
- Track/monitor changes in land use along public waterways subject to the buffer law.
- Monitor changes in land use that might indicate new housing/commercial development so that E911 and other interested parties can get advanced warnings.
- Planet's imagery can also support planning efforts. For example, Alaska DOT & Planet engineers successfully paired Planet imagery with drones and used Planet imagery for inaccessible areas in Alaska to understand the basic conditions of their transportation infrastructure.

Survey for GIS Support
By Christy Prentice
GIS Support Guidance Survey: Results were compiled from GIS Steering Team participants. The survey covered 14 questions on support and training scenarios for Portal and related low code/no code Esri solutions.
How do users new to Portal or GIS concepts get quick basic training on the basic functions of Portal? How do users get advanced Portal training? Who provides support to MnDOT employees who need to use specific ESRI products, but don’t have access to the solutions? Is creating and sharing items in Portal considered development work?
Check out the “About GIS Support” page and “Standards” section of the MnDOT ArcGIS Portal Guidance document along with the survey results.

Funding secured for a Geospatial Commons Upgrade
By Megan Sisko, MNIT
The Minnesota Geospatial Information Office (MnGeo) has been awarded Technology Modernization Funding from Minnesota IT Services to upgrade the Minnesota Geospatial Commons. https://tmf.cio.gov This upgrade will focus on making the Commons more user-friendly and strengthening its security. In addition, MnGeo plans to increase the number of web map services available through the platform for use in desktop and web-based GIS, such as ArcGIS Online.
Receiving input from the community will be essential to meet user needs and maximize the potential of modernizing the Commons. If you see a survey or meeting about this, please participate - your input and ideas are welcome and needed!
MnGeo will continue to share more information with you as it becomes available. Thank you for your ongoing partnership in supporting the Commons.

MN State Agency GIS Collaborative - GIS Bytes
Summary
GIS Bytes operates as a workgroup within the MN State Agency GIS Collaborative. GIS Bytes mission is to provide networking and educational events during the lunch hour that promote geospatial knowledge across all state agencies. To learn about dates and times of upcoming GIS Bytes presentations go to https://ihub/gis/ (Click to follow link) then click training to watch previous GIS Bytes.
History:
GIS Bytes originated in 2017 as ‘Lunch and Learns’. In 2018, ‘Lunch and Learns’ were successfully rebranded as GIS Bytes with a new customized logo. In-Person venues rotated around various state agencies and shared via Skype for remote audiences. 2019, we begin to use Yammer for posting recorded bytes to grow the audience to about 500 annually. 2020 was challenging as Covid halted the In-person webinars. However, the Virtual participation began to grow. Total views Online and Yammer topped 1,300. The growth spike was a result of the consistent quality of the topics and speakers. 2021 and 2022 yielded 1400 and 1600 views respectively. While averaging 12 GIS Bytes/Year, 2023 maintained 1600 views. The largest audience for a single byte was in February 2024 at 350 Online and 70 Yammer Views to date.
Work plan:
The goal of the GIS Bytes workgroup is to plan brown bag style events. These are mini trainings to inspire innovation, opportunities to make valuable connections, and a chance for the Collaborative to reach the state's GIS user community. Participation, speaker recommendations, and comments are always welcome.
Goal 1: Provide a GIS Byte every month through Microsoft Teams.
Goal 2: Cover a wide variety of topics to appeal to a wide variety of GIS users.
Goal 3: Encourage and track participation.
