Transportation Research Update
As 2023 comes to a close, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on the past year. Partnering with 16 universities across the country, we worked on 179 projects, guided by over 617 technical advisory panel members. We are grateful for your continued support in informing, improving, and innovating transportation in Minnesota.
We continued to advance MnDOT’s research strategic priorities: safety, equity, asset management, climate change and the environment, and innovation and future needs.

This past year, we found solutions to modern transportation problems, supporting practitioners in the work they do every day. For example:
- We collected data to help optimize the flow of freight by all modes of transport.
- We explored a nonmetallic, no-rust steel alternative for reinforcing bridge decks.
- We assessed stormwater control methods such as rain gardens for flood prevention.
- We refined a system to help snowplow drivers navigate within traffic lanes during low-visibility conditions.
Looking towards 2024, we are excited to release our updated Research Strategic Plan and pilot a new research benefit monitoring framework, developed through our Value of Research project.
To learn more about research highlights, project contracts, and program expenditures, we invite you to explore our 2023 Annual Report.
