169 REDEFINE: Expect lanes to shift as crews pave lanes
Minnesota Department of Transportation sent this bulletin at 10/19/2023 05:04 PM CDT
D3 - Hwy 169 Redefine - Elk River freeway: 2022-2024 construction
Expect changes through the work zone the next two weeks
Good news—the 169 project is on schedule to open both new interchanges between Main St. and 197th Ave. by early November.
The project is taking shape and the Elk River community and 169 team are getting excited to see it open.

In the next two weeks, motorists will encounter changes as workers open and close work areas. Hwy 169 will remain one lane in each direction; however, lanes will need to shift around to pave the final layer of asphalt. Crews will also:
Pave lanes, access ramps and side street connections
Complete concrete work—sidewalk, walls, etc.
Install road markings and permanent road signs
Install and activate signal systems at Jackson/193rd Ave. and School St./Elk Hills Dr.
Temporary accesses used to assist with local traffic will also be removed by early November, which includes the signal at Gates Ave./Main St. and the compact roundabout on Evans St.
In November, off-road work may occur. Motorists may encounter a periodic lane or shoulder closure. When temperatures are to cold and snow arrives, work operations will suspend for the winter.
Schedule is tentative and based on good weather conditions.
In 2024, crews will return to construct the last Hwy 169 interchange at Main St. A project open house will be held in spring and more details will be provided once closer.
More about this 169 Redefine project
When the freeway is complete in 2024, the project will improve traffic flow, increase capacity and reduce bottle necks, and improve motorist and pedestrian safety along three miles of Hwy 169 in Elk River, Sherburne County.
