It's been busy, busy, busy on Highway 34, with several different operations currently taking place throughout the 21-mile project:
- Shell River bridge/box culvert replacement wrapping up
- Paving west of Toad Lake to County Road 29 nearly complete
- Milling and reclaiming train east of Toad Lake to County Road 26/47 currently underway
- Turn lane installation east of County Road 26/47 starts next week
As a reminder, please drive with extreme caution in the work zone, obey flaggers and wait patiently for pilot cars. If you are accessing Highway 34 from a side street, please remember to wait for a pilot car before entering to ensure you do not meet head-to-head traffic on one-lane roads or drive over hot asphalt. Your cooperation is important and appreciated.
Thru-traffic: If you don't have a destination on Highway 34, take the detour route on County Road 47, Highway 87 and County Road 29.
Starting next week, as early as Monday, Aug. 28, weather permitting, crew will begin installing turn lanes at the intersection of Highway 34 and County Road 26/47. Motorists will encounter lane closures with flaggers in this area for approximately one week.
The box culvert at the Shell River is in and crews are now working on one last culvert replacement just east of the river. Until the area is passable again (we expect soon!!), a reminder that local traffic cannot enter the work zone from the east, so you'll need to take an alternate route to your destination or take the detour.
Paving is nearly complete west of Toad Lake to County Road 29! When they finish paving in this area, the crews will jump back to the center of the project and start paving east of Toad Lake. Currently, milling and reclaiming are taking place between Toad Lake and County Road 26/47, with operations moving east toward Osage.
Local traffic should be prepared for significant delays between County Road 37 and County Road 26/47 until mid-September, including multiple pilot cars and flaggers, periodic stops and long waits.
Plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to get through the work zone if you must travel on Highway 34. These delays will extend travel time on Highway 34. Watch for bumps, loose gravel, uneven surfaces and trucks hauling. Always obey the flaggers and pilot cars.
If you don't have a destination on Highway 34, please follow the detour.
All schedules and work plans are subject to change at any time based on weather, contractor schedules or other unforeseen circumstances or issues. The overall project is expected to be completed by mid-October.
