Z ARCHIVE Metro – I-35W in Bloomington: 2023 construction
Beginning Fri, Aug. 4, our construction crews on two different construction projects are coordinating paving and ramp work on I-35W and at the I-35W/I-494 interchange in Bloomington and Richfield. While crews complete this work, there will be a weekend closure of I-35W in both directions. Continue reading for more details:
Southbound I-35W closure
Starting at 10 p.m. Fri, Aug. 4, southbound I-35W will be closed between Hwy 62 and 106th St. through 5 a.m. Mon, Aug. 7. All southbound ramps between Hwy 62 and 106th St. will also be closed. This is the last of three weekend closures of southbound I-35W between I-494 in Bloomington and I-35E in Burnsville as part of the I-35W in Bloomington project.
If you plan on traveling in the area, you can use I-494 to Hwy 77 to I-35E/I-35W split as a detour.
Northbound I-35W Closure
Beginning at 10 p.m. Fri, Aug. 4, northbound I-35W will be closed between I-494 and Hwy 62 through 5 a.m. Mon, Aug. 7. Northbound I-35W between 106th St. and I-494 will also be closed overnight from 1-5 a.m. on Sat, Aug. 5 and Sun, Aug. 6. If you plan on traveling in the area, you can use I-35E to Hwy 77 to Hwy 62 as a detour.
These northbound closures are necessary so crews on the I-494 Edina to Richfield project can build bridge piers in the median of I-35W, complete utility work, and begin permanent ramp construction.
After the weekend closure, the following ramps will remain closed:
Through early October
- The ramp from East Bush Lake Rd. to eastbound I-494 is closed
Through November:
- The ramp from southbound I-35W to westbound I-494 is closed
We appreciate your patience while we make these improvements. Be sure to slow down when approaching every work zone, plan ahead by checking 511, and give yourself additional time to reach your destination.
Please note that all timeframes are approximate, subject to change, and weather and schedule dependent.
This summer, crews are working to resurface I-35W in Bloomington between 82nd St. and 106th St. Crews will also add lanes in both directions between 98th St. and 106th St., and make improvements to ramps, sidewalks, and signals at four intersections (90th St., 94th St., 98th St. and 106th St.).
Motorists can expect lane, ramp, and weekend directional closures while crews do work on I-35W and the four intersections.
