The time has come as part of Phase 1 of the Highway 9 reconstruction project in Barnesville! Starting as soon as Wednesday, June 21, weather permitting, the intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 34 will be temporarily closed daily as crews begin road reconstruction and utility replacements at the intersection.
Each day, flaggers will direct Highway 34 traffic around the work zone. During non-working hours, the intersection will reopen to cross-traffic.
The work is expected to take approximately two days. Once completed, the road surface at the intersection will remain gravel until phase one paving takes place in August.
Highway 9 thru-traffic remains detoured to I-94 and County Road 30.
SAFETY REMINDER: Slow down when traveling in the work zone
Barricades, signs and other traffic control devices are set up for the safety of everyone. Whenever you enter the work zone - even in areas where there is no active work taking place - you must slow down and stay alert. Be aware of potential changing road conditions, new traffic patterns, trucks hauling, slow-moving equipment, workers, and other motorists and pedestrians.
Work zone safety is everyone's responsibility. Always travel with extreme caution and care.
Project phases
Phase 1: Highway 34 to Main Avenue. Expected to take approx. 3 months.
Phase 2: Main Avenue from Fourth Street to Front Street. Expected to take up to 6 weeks.
Phase 3: Hwy 34 to Interstate 94. At least one lane will always be open to local traffic, utilizing flaggers and/or a pilot car.

**Reminder: Construction schedules are always subject to change without warning due to weather, contractor workplans, or any unforeseen delays or issues.
Residential and business access is being maintained at all times, but local traffic should expect restrictions in the areas where crews are working. Depending on your destination, you will need to use local streets to get around construction.
Barnesville businesses remain open during construction! Check in with the business to get the best route to their location.
If your destination does not fall within the work zone, please take the detour or find an alternate route. Your cooperation and patience is appreciated!
