We're one week into road construction on Highway 9 in Barnesville. Crews hit the ground running in Phase 1 - pavement and concrete have been removed between Main Avenue and Highway 34, and underground utility work is underway. The utility work is the most tedious and time-consuming part of the project, so they'll be focused on this work until mid-July.
Front Street/Main Avenue closure and temporary water impacts
Next Tuesday, June 13, the intersection of Front Street and Main Avenue will temporarily close, as crews tie in the existing and new water main systems. For several hours on Tuesday, between 9 a.m. and noon, residents and businesses will be switched to a temporary water service which may result in reduced water pressure. You may also see potential discolored water or debris after the work is completed, which is normal after line flushing. As long as everything goes as planned, we do not anticipate significant water disruptions.
Future closure at Highway 9/Highway 34 intersection
In the upcoming weeks, crews will need to temporarily close the intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 34 for one day to tie in the new utility system to the existing one. A date has not yet been determined, but is likely to occur sometime during the week of June 19. Traffic will be rerouted temporarily while that work is taking place. More information will be shared as the project progresses toward that step.
SAFETY REMINDER: Slow down when traveling in the work zone
Barricades, signs and other traffic control devices are set up for the safety of everyone. Whenever you enter the work zone - even in areas where there is no active work taking place - you must slow down and stay alert. Be aware of potential changing road conditions, new traffic patterns, trucks hauling, slow-moving equipment, workers, and other motorists and pedestrians.
Work zone safety is everyone's responsibility. Always travel with extreme caution and care.
Project phases
Phase 1: Highway 34 to Main Avenue. Expected to take approx. 3 months.
Phase 2: Main Avenue from Fourth Street to Front Street. Expected to take up to 6 weeks.
Phase 3: Hwy 34 to Interstate 94. At least one lane will always be open to local traffic, utilizing flaggers and/or a pilot car.

**Reminder: Construction schedules are always subject to change without warning due to weather, contractor workplans, or any unforeseen delays or issues.
Residential and business access is being maintained at all times, but local traffic should expect restrictions in the areas where crews are working. Depending on your destination, you will need to use local streets to get around construction. Throughout construction, Highway 34 will remain open to cross-traffic, with the exception of the one day when utility work takes place in the intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 34.
Barnesville businesses remain open during construction! Check in with the business to get the best route to their location.
If your destination does not fall within the work zone, please take the detour or find an alternate route. Your cooperation and patience is appreciated!
