MnDOT and its partners provide free workforce training for eligible women, BIPOC people and people facing disadvantage. Participants must be at least 18 years-old, have a valid driver's license and a high school diploma or GED. They must also have skills in basic math and in English reading and speaking.
MnDOT also offers two summer camps to introduce youth to careers in transportation.
Highway heavy laborer training in Rochester
Get hands-on experience in highway heavy construction labor. Gain access to placement assistance and services that help you enter the construction industry. MnDOT offers this training in partnership with Workforce Development, Inc.

Highway heavy carpenter training in Rochester
Gain highway carpentry skills through hands-on training. Earn safety certifications and connect with employers. MnDOT offers this training in partnership with the Carpenters Training Institute.

Youth summer camps
Connected Automated Vehicle Camp
In the CAV Career Pathways Camp, students will learn about connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technology such as self-driving cars and automated shuttles. This is a cutting-edge industry that shapes the future of transportation. Students will explore career opportunities in this industry with hands-on opportunities and field trips
- Aug. 7 - 11, 2023 at the University of Minnesota
- For students entering grades 10, 11 or 12 and
- Interested in automotive tech and maintenance, manufacturing, engineering, planning or robotics
- Students must complete the 2023 CAV Career Pathways Camp Application and submit a transcript or recent report card.
National Summer Training Institute
students learn about different career opportunities in construction, take virtual field trips and learn about bridge design through hands on activities.
