Highway 371 Hackensack
Thank you to everyone who has been a part of creating a vision for the future of Hwy 371. We will continue to keep the community updated via project emails and our website.
Project Update
Our team has been busy working with individual property owners for the acquisition of temporary and permanent right of way along the project corridor. It’s a process that is needed for construction of the project to accommodate the new roadway geometry and provide working space for the contractor. Currently, we are finalizing the design details and will continue to engage with residents and business owners.
The project is anticipated to take place in 2024 and will require a detour for construction. More information on the staging plan will be provided as we approach the project start.
Proposed Design
A new 3-lane section was selected as the preferred design. It was based off the conclusions from the Stakeholder Advisory Committee, business interviews, in-person events, along with additional input provided by community members and stakeholders. It includes:
- One lane in each direction
- A center left-turn lane
- Sidewalks and parallel parking on both sides of the street throughout the downtown area
- Single lane roundabout at the Hwy 371/CR 5 intersection
 On-street parking
The new design includes new sidewalks along Hwy 371 through Hackensack. Along with striped diagonal parking on Whipple, Lake and Murray Avenues, it includes a total of 57 parking spots along that two-block stretch.
 Roundabout
The roundabout will improve safety while also helping to reduce speeds entering Hackensack from the north. It’s been designed to accommodate semi’s/trailers and will reconfigure the connection with First Street North to make the intersection more predictable.
 About the Project
Overall, the project will enhance mobility and safety for all users. Check out the project website to see more pictures and layouts of what the new corridor will look like.
MnDOT plans to reconstruct Highway 371 between County Road 40 and County Road 5 in Hackensack in 2024. The project will improve the highway surface, construct new sidewalks, and make it safer for everyone to use Highway 371. It also includes reconstructing the intersection at County Road 5 with a roundabout. MnDOT began an in-depth study of the corridor in 2019.
