Starting Monday, July 25, Highway 55/59 will close between CR 54 and CR 21 as crews begin the first stage of construction!
The overall project will address pavement concerns, shoulder widening, culvert replacements, turn lanes, access improvements, and pedestrian upgrades in the City of Barrett.
What to expect during construction
There will be two phases to the construction.
Phase 1: CR 54 to CR 21
The majority of the road work will take place in Phase 1, between CR 54 and CR 21. This section will be closed through October. Even when phase two begins in September, Phase 1 will stay closed to traffic. The Phase 1 detour will follow CR 54 and CR 8.
Phase 2: Elbow Lake to CR 54; CR 21 to Barrett
In mid-September, for four weeks, motorists and residents can expect additional closures during phase two of construction on the east and west ends of the project, near Elbow Lake and near Barrett. The phase two traffic impacts will include:
- First: Road closes south of railroad tracks in Elbow Lake through the CR 54 intersection
- Detour extended: CR 1/Division Street, CR 25, CR 54, CR 8
- Then: Lane closures, flaggers between CR 21 and Park Street in Barrett.
A reminder to area travelers that County Road 21 is being used as part of the detour route for Grant County’s County Road 10 project. Although the stretch of Highway 55/59 between County Road 21 and County Road 8 near Barrett will be open to traffic, motorists should drive with caution and watch for trucks hauling and slow-moving equipment entering/exiting the work zone.
Hwy 55/59 residents: Please travel with caution to/from your property. Driveway access will be maintained throughout the duration of construction, but expect to encounter daily lane closures, slow-moving equipment, trucks hauling, etc. The roadway may be impassable at times or access restricted when crews work on culvert replacements. Please check-in with staff on-site if you have questions regarding driveway access or contact MnDOT.
