One-hundred-eighteen Minnesota schools participated in Bike to School Day on May 4, a national event that encourages bicycling (or walking) to school. Students experienced the health, community and academic benefits of a little bit of exercise before school while having fun riding bicycles with their peers. And after a long couple of years, it was a great way to bring the fun back to school! We were excited to see so many happy students out biking and walking enjoying Minnesota’s spring time.

Funding opportunity
Community Spark Grants from the League of American Bicyclists are meant to be a catalyst for empowering your community through bike-related projects that create more Bicycle Friendly Communities. What ideas do you have for your community?
As record numbers of people have been getting out to take bicycle rides, streets have been converted to “slow streets.” Other solutions have been used to accommodate safer, slower speeds for people biking, walking and rolling to get around. Advocates have been reimagining how to transform their streets and communities, and we are excited to invite you to join in these transformations.
The league will award 10 grants of up to $1,500 to organizations seeking to improve their communities through biking. To be eligible to apply, organizations must be based in the United States and be a nonprofit (501c3, 501c4 and 501c6) and/or a public or government agency/organization.
Safe Routes to School in the news
Eighteen students were recognized on May 10 for meeting a strict reading goal of 30 books in a tight time frame. As a reward, each student earned a free bicycle, lock and helmet, courtesy of Willmar's Sharon Lodge of the Masons.
We are thrilled to share Governor Tim Walz signed a proclamation for Bike to School Day, May 4, 2022.
It was a real treat seeing longtime SRTS advocate Joanne Judge Dietz mentioned in this June 1 Minnesota Public Radio article on how hair and bikes are working together to support healthier, happier kids!
