Wheel of a good time – Bike to School Day was May 4

Schoolchildren biking for bike to school day

One-hundred-eighteen Minnesota schools participated in Bike to School Day on May 4, a national event that encourages bicycling (or walking) to school. Students experienced the health, community and academic benefits of a little bit of exercise before school while having fun riding bicycles with their peers. And after a long couple of years, it was a great way to bring the fun back to school! We were excited to see so many happy students out biking and walking enjoying Minnesota’s spring time.

Poster contest winner

Pedaling a bicycle can create some of childhood’s happiest moments. We love to see what students in Minnesota feel when riding a bicycle and we try to capture this with our annual poster contest.

Winners for our sixth-annual Bike to School Day Poster Contest, from St. Michael and Field Elementary in Minneapolis, will receive their own bike-themed prize packs care of Quality Bicycle Products. The packs include a CamelBak hydration pack, helmet, lock, bell and multitool. There were so many great posters to choose from, with a wide array of positive and hilarious messages.

Funding opportunity

Community Spark Grants from the League of American Bicyclists are meant to be a catalyst for empowering your community through bike-related projects that create more Bicycle Friendly Communities. What ideas do you have for your community?

As record numbers of people have been getting out to take bicycle rides, streets have been converted to “slow streets.” Other solutions have been used to accommodate safer, slower speeds for people biking, walking and rolling to get around. Advocates have been reimagining how to transform their streets and communities, and we are excited to invite you to join in these transformations.

The league will award 10 grants of up to $1,500 to organizations seeking to improve their communities through biking. To be eligible to apply, organizations must be based in the United States and be a nonprofit (501c3, 501c4 and 501c6) and/or a public or government agency/organization.
