We're a few weeks into construction on Highway 55 between Wendell and the State Line. The roadway has been closed between Highway 9 and CR 11 in Wendell, and crews have been moving right along through Stage 1 of construction. Work continues on the two box culverts located east and west of the CR 19 intersection near Nashua, and paving is expected to start on Sat., June 4.
As a reminder, the staging is:
- Stage 1, from County Road 11 in Wendell to Highway 9
- Stage 2, from Highway 9 to Highway 75
- Stage 3, from Highway 75 to the MN/ND state line
Traffic changes starting next week
The contractor is combining the last two stages of construction for the 22 1/2-mile resurfacing project. As early as Thursday, June 9, weather permitting, Highway 55 will close between Fairmount, ND, and Highway 9.
Depending on direction of travel, traffic will be detoured to Highway 9, Highway 75, MN Wilkin County Road 6/ND Richland County Road 16, and ND Highway 127.
For motorists traveling on Highway 75, you’ll use Highway 9 to travel east back to Highway 55, and County Road 6 to travel west into North Dakota. In addition, Highway 75 will remain open at the Highway 55 intersection for cross-traffic.
The upcoming closures are due to culvert replacements, located east and west of the intersection with Highway 75. During those replacements, the roadway will be impassable at the box culverts sites and residents/other local traffic will need to use the detour or find an alternate route to their destination on Highway 55.
Other traffic impacts
Although the Stage 1 work zone (Highway 9 to County Road 11 in Wendell) will be reopening to thru-traffic later next week, please plan ahead for delays and lane closures during paving operations. Flaggers and a pilot car will direct traffic.
Starting June 13, Highway 9 will close between Highway 55 and Highway 27 for the bridge replacement project at the Mustinka River near Norcross. Traffic will be detoured to Highway 27 and Highway 75 until the end of August. Depending on your destination and direction of travel, you may encounter both project detours on your route.
