Students across Minnesota were rolling to school on May 4
Faribault, MN
Nearly 120 Minnesota schools participated in Bike to School Day on May 4! This national event encourages bicycling (or walking) to school. Gov. Tim Walz also signed a proclamation in support of Bike to School Day. Students reap the health, community and academic benefits of a little bit of exercise before school while having fun riding bicycles with their peers. And after a long couple of years, it was a great way to bring the fun back to school. We were excited to see so many happy students out biking and walking enjoying Minnesota’s spring time. Here’s a few photos from across Minnesota. View more Bike to School Day photos on MnSRTS facebook or by using the #MNBikeDay hashtag on social media.

Still time to submit: Bike to School Day Poster Contest
Pedaling a bicycle can create some of childhood’s happiest moments. Minnesota Safe Routes to School is holding our seventh annual Bike to School Day Poster Contest as part of Bike to School Day. A statewide poster contest asking students "How does it feel to ride a bicycle?" is available to help all students participate in Bike to School Day.
Teachers interested in the poster contest can download lesson plans to support instruction for their classrooms (K-3 lesson plan PDF or 4th-8th lesson plan PDF).
Contest entries must be submitted by the end of the day May 20, 2022, and winners will be awarded a fantastic prize package from Quality Bicycle Products.
Minnesota Student Survey
Schools across Minnesota are deploying the Minnesota Student Survey. The Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) is one of the longest-running youth surveys in the nation. It is a biennial survey that began in 1989. More than 170,000 public school students participated in the MSS in 2019. The anonymous statewide school-based survey seeks insights into the world of students and their experiences. The next MSS will be administered between January and June 2022 to students in grades 5, 8, 9 and 11.
We are excited to share a new question related to Safe Routes to Schools. The survey asks students how they get to and from school - by bus, bike, walking, carpooling or other means. This will help the MnSRTS program collect valuable data on the amount of walkers and bikers in the state, providing additional direction for the program. We look forward to sharing the data in the fall.
