It's finally starting to feel a bit more like spring and good timing, because construction on Highway 55 is about to begin!
Starting Monday, May 16, weather permitting, Highway 55 will close between County Road 11 in Wendell and Highway 9. The closure marks the first of three closures/detours for the resurfacing project on Highway 55 between Wendell and the Minnesota/North Dakota state line.
For this first stage, traffic will be detoured to Grant County Road 11, Grant County Road 26/Wilkin County Road 4, and Highway 9 until early June.
Local traffic & box culverts
If you live or work along Highway 55, driveway access will be maintained throughout the duration of construction. In addition to resurfacing, crews will also replace four box culverts. During those replacements, the roadway will be impassable at the box culvert locations and you will need to find an alternate route to your destination on Highway 55. In the first stage, those box culverts are located east and west of the intersection with County Road 19.
Work zones
The work zone for the 22 1/2-mile-long project will be broken down into three stages, with work starting on the east end of the project moving west. During each stage, Highway 55 will close and thru-traffic will be detoured:
- Stage 1, from Grant County Road 11 in Wendell to Highway 9. Detour: Grant County Road 11, Grant County Road 26/Wilkin County Road 4, Highway 9
- Stage 2, from Highway 9 to Highway 75. Detour: Highway 9, Highway 75
- Stage 3, from Highway 75 to the MN/ND state line. Detour: Highway 75, MN Wilkin County Road 6/ND Richland County Road 16, ND Highway 127
Overall, the project is expected to be completed by mid-July.
