2021 Construction: Hwy 87 Frazee to Becker/Wadena County Line
We're about one month into construction on Highway 87! We know road closures and road construction can be frustrating and challenging to navigate, especially on a project like this one that's 26 miles long! Thank you for your patience and cooperation so far. There are still several months of work ahead, so your continued commitment to safety is appreciated.
Over the last month, crews have finished paving between the Becker/Wadena County Line and Evergreen, started shoulder widening between Frazee and Evergreen, and began replacement of the bridge over the Otter Tail River.
In the coming weeks, expect to see crews out in Section 1 (Becker/Wadena County Line to Evergreen) to complete shouldering, rumbles and final striping. Once that work is completed, it'll probably be a little quieter on that side of the work zone for the duration of the project, but watch for workers and equipment traveling through the area. The highway will remain closed to thru-traffic until October.
In Section 2 (Frazee to Evergreen), shoulder widening continues. Crews have also been working on centerline and entrance culvert replacements, and starting June 14, they will begin working on a larger culvert/bridge between County Road 31 and County Road 33/County Road 115. When that begins, the roadway will be impassable for up to two weeks at the culvert site, just west of the County Road 33/County Road 115 intersection. If you travel regularly through this area, you will need to find an alternate route around the culvert location.
Highway 87 also remains impassable at the Otter Tail River in Frazee, between North River Drive and Main Avenue East.
Work zone safety reminders
Important reminder: Highway 87 is an active work zone. If you do not have a destination along Highway 87, follow the detour or find an alternate route. Access is being maintained for residents and businesses, and flaggers are controlling traffic in areas where crews are working.
Please obey traffic control. Flaggers are there to keep everyone safe. If you have a destination within the work zone, please tell the flaggers so they know to let you through. However, in some cases you may be turned around when it’s deemed unsafe to pass. Local traffic should expect to encounter lane closures, periodic stops and delays. Please plan ahead.
Information for locals
Local traffic on the west end of the project: If you live in Frazee, you can still access Highway 87 in front of the school up to North River Drive. The barricades are up at CR 29/Birch Avenue to ensure thru-traffic follows the detour. The work zone begins after North River Drive. Highway 87 is impassable at the Otter Tail River, between North River Drive and Main Avenue East. You'll need to find an alternate route around the bridge site.
Local traffic on the east end of the project: If you live in Menahga, you can access Highway 87 in town. The barricades are up at Highway 71 to ensure thru-traffic follows the detour. The work zone starts further west at the county line.
Mailbox relocations: If you live on Highway 87 between Frazee and Evergreen, your mailbox has been relocated. Visit the project website to get a breakdown of where temporary mailboxes can be found.
