Heads up! If you’re driving through the project area, please be aware of upcoming traffic changes on southbound I-35W near the river bridge. Motorists will continue to have three travel lanes in each direction on I-35W through the summer.
Overnight southbound lane closures
Beginning at 10 p.m. on Fri, May 15 through 5 a.m. the following morning, Sat, May 16, crews will be altering the southbound travel lanes south of the river bridge to create a new traffic pattern that will be in place through summer. During the traffic switch, southbound I-35W will be reduced to a single lane.
Be prepared to choose a lane on southbound I-35W
- Lane alterations south of the river bridge
After the traffic switch is complete on Saturday morning, motorists traveling on southbound I-35W should be prepared to choose a lane south of the river bridge. Here’s what you can expect:
- If you want to exit onto Cliff Rd., you should stay in the right lane and follow the “I-35W/local access” signs. You will need to be in this lane to exit onto Cliff Rd.
- If you’re traveling south of Cliff Rd. in Burnsville, you should be in the two right lanes and follow the “I-35W south” signs to continue through the construction area.
- Please note: the far left southbound travel lane is reserved for MnPASS only during peak travel times.
- Lane alterations north of the river bridge – coming in early June!
Watch your email for additional travel impacts on southbound I-35W in early June.
Visit the project website before you drive to see how this will work.
Plan ahead before you drive
If you plan to travel through the area, know your route before you drive and follow speed limits within the construction zone. Even with fewer vehicles on the road, these changes will require you to be alert and drive with care.
Please note that timeframes are all approximate, subject to change and weather and schedule permitting.

MnDOT road work has been identified as a critical service in Governor Walz’s Stay at Home executive order and will continue. We are working to be as flexible as possible with scheduling during this period of lower traffic volumes to keep projects moving forward in a timely manner. Following guidance from state health officials and to prevent further spread of COVID-19, crews will maintain social distancing practices while working.
The I-35W Minnesota River Bridge construction project will include reconstructing the I-35W and the 106th St. bridges spanning the Minnesota River, replacing pavement from Cliff Rd. to 106th St. and constructing a trail between Black Dog Rd. and Lyndale Ave.
Visit the I-35W Minnesota River Bridge project website for more details about traffic impacts and detours during construction: mndot.gov/metro/projects/i35wbloomington.
