What to expect this year on I-35W between Roseville and Lino Lakes

Crews are ready to start the second year of the three-year I-35W North MnPASS construction project between Roseville and Lino Lakes. This year, crews will be reconstructing the middle of I-35W between Co. Rd. C in Roseville and Co. Rd. J in Blaine and the northbound side of I-35W between Co. Rd. J and Sunset Ave. in Lino Lakes.

Ready for the good news? During the 2020 construction season, we’ll be able to keep the same number of lanes open on I-35W, just like it was before construction. There may be some short-term lane closures, but for the most part all lanes will remain open.

Watch a video to get an overview of the 2020 project schedule and traffic impacts.

Construction activities and traffic impacts in 2020

  • In the coming week, drivers should expect lane shifts on I-35W and continue to keep an eye out for changes during the construction season
  • Crews need to complete paving on the Co. Rd. D ramp to southbound I-35W later this spring and will need a short-term closure of this ramp
  • Ramp closures along northbound I-35W will occur from mid-summer through the fall. We’ll send out updates before ramps close and reopen, but you can get a general overview of what to expect this year on the project website: mndot.gov/metro/projects/35wnorthmnpass/schedule.html.
  • Lane widths on I-35W will be reduced to 11 feet
  • Noise wall construction will continue along southbound and northbound I-35W
  • Crews will generally work during daytime hours, but some work may occur overnight depending on the construction activity

There are several projects along I-35 this year. Plan ahead, know your route and check 511 for real-time traffic updates.

MnDOT road work has been identified as a critical service in Governor Walz’s Stay at Home executive order and will continue. We are working to be as flexible as possible with scheduling during this period of lower traffic volumes to keep projects moving forward in a timely manner. Following guidance from state health officials and to prevent further spread of COVID-19, crews will maintain social distancing practices while working.
