November Research Pays Off

Mark your calendars for this month's webinar:

November 19, 10am central | Skype

“Determining Pavement Design Criteria for Recycled Aggregate Base and Large Stone Subbase”
presented by Bora Cetin for Iowa State University

The overall goal of this project is to evaluate the performance of recycled materials and large stone subbase materials and develop a specification/guideline for their use in roadway bases. Test cells were constructed using recycled aggregate base (RAB) and large stone subbase (LSSB) layers for this project. The RAB layers were constructed at 300-mm thickness using two different recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) materials with different gradations and a blend of RCA and recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) materials. The LSSB layers were constructed at 460-mm and 230-mm thicknesses using large crushed granite. Geosynthetics were included in several test cells to separate the subgrade and the LSSB layers and mitigate subgrade soil pumping into porous LSSB structure and rutting. This presentation will cover the summary of the after construction performance of test sections and their index and laboratory engineering properties.

October Recap

In case you missed last month's webinar, here is a recap from the PI Peter Taylor:

The goal of the project is to evaluate the performance of concrete paving mixtures containing reduced cementitious material contents. The work is intended to understand potential placement issues and other material-related problems that can affect the performance of pavements cast with such mixtures.

Optimized concrete mixtures with reduced cementitious materials content were employed for construction of two test cells at the MnROAD facility. Mixtures with “low” cementitious content, i.e., 500 lb/yd3, and “lower” cementitious content, i.e., 470 lb/yd3, were used at two identical (except for concrete mix) cells 138 and 238, respectively. Each cell is about 260 feet long. Performance is being compared with that of a conventional cell constructed earlier.

NRRA at the TRB Annual Meeting

The NRRA will have a booth at the TRB Annual Meeting again this year. We'll be bigger and better with an expanded size space and we're making our plans for design and layout, printed materials, and more.

Join us at the Booth

We'd like to invite our current associate members to join us for an hour or two in talking with visitors at our booth. Volunteer to help us engage with booth visitors. (No account setup required!)

To prevent clutter, each associates may bring business cards and copies of one printed piece to promote their organization while at the booth. Email Lauren with any questions.

NRRA Meeting

We are also organizing an NRRA meeting during the Annual Meeting, tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, January 15.

Funds for Current State Members

We have funds to sponsor 2 people from each state agency. Please contact Lisa Bilotta for more information at lisa.bilotta@state.mn.us.
