MnDOT certifies small businesses in project and construction management

NOTE: We are resending this update because we inadvertently omitted some key partners and speakers in our original email.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation Small Business Resource Center partnered with the Association of General Contractors and the National Association of Minority Contractors in February to host the three-part Project and Construction Management series.

The trainings offered 15 participants insight and knowledge into the planning, coordinating and executing of construction projects.

Lynn Pingol, CEO for Makee Company who crafted the series, said, “In our one-on-one interactions with Disadvantaged Business Enterprise firms we received frequent requests to bring a practical approach to project and construction management, which is the inspiration for this series.”

The agenda tactically incorporated expert speakers to explain strategic design, engineering and legal aspects of project planning.

Guest speakers included:

  • Merry Beckman and Tim Worke, Association of General Contractors
  • Keith Baker, National Association of Minority Contractors
  • Joe Uhlhorn, Wenk Engineering
  • Elisa Bottos, MnDOT
  • Amy Sullivan, MnDOT
  • Mayjoua Ly, MnDOT
  • Dan Duffy, Lunda Construction

Ashanti Payne, MnDOT’s Operations Manager, said, “The training provides participants with an understanding of project management practices and identifies roadblocks that can affect schedule, and documentation requirements so small businesses can successfully participate on MnDOT contracts.”

At the conclusion of the comprehensive workshop, 15 attendees received the Project and Construction Management Award, which is a certification of completion for demonstrating an understanding of project and construction management.

The Small Business Resource Center in partnership with Makee Company, was developed to offer education and training resources to help businesses thrive.
