Details on each update are provided below.

I-35W weekend closures scheduled Aug. 3-6

A weekend closure of I-35W is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. Fri, Aug. 3. I-35W will be closed between Hwy 62 and I-694. 

  • Detour: Hwy 62, Hwy 100 and I-694
  • Hwy 280 will also be closed. Both directions of Hwy 280 will remain open to local traffic between University Ave. and Larpenteur Ave. SB I-35W from Co. Rd. C to SB Hwy 280 will be closed. WB Hwy 36 to SB Hwy 280 will be closed.
  • Access from SB I-694 to Co. Rd. C will remain open.

The road will reopen by 5 a.m. on Mon, Aug. 6.

The closures are needed for two highway projects. The 35W@94 project will be working between I-94 and Hwy 62 demolishing the 40th St. pedestrian and bicycle bridge. The I-35W Minneapolis to Roseville project will be resurfacing the road between Fourth St. in Minneapolis and Co. Rd. C in Roseville.

Construction activities successfully completed the weekend of July 27-30

We really appreciate your patience during last weekend’s (July 27-30) closure of I-35W between I-694 and Hwy 62. We understand that weekend closures can be frustrating.

Because of the weekend closure, two projects, 35W@94 and the I-35W Resurfacing, safely and efficiently completed work and made significant progress, including:

  • Resurfacing of northbound I-35W lanes between 4th St. and Co. Rd. C
 Resurfacing work along I-35W minneapolis to reoseville
  • Finishing work to reopen the ramp from westbound I-94 to 11th St. in downtown Minneapolis
  • Placing traffic on newly paved westbound I-94 lanes between Chicago Ave. and Nicollet Ave.
  • Asphalt patching on I-35W between downtown and 43rd St. to provide a smoother road

  • Installation of a utility line across I-35W at 39th St.

 
  • Conducting soil borings on I-35W as part of the storm water tank storage project 

We appreciate your patience in helping to build better roads and a multimodal transportation system that supports a growing economy and a stronger community!

And we continue to ask for your patience and understanding as there is another closure of I-35W between I-694 and Hwy 62 this weekend (Aug. 3-6). Details below.

40th St. bridge closes Aug. 3

With the reopening of the 38th St. bridge, the 40th St. bridge will close to pedestrians and bicyclists on Fri, Aug. 3 for reconstruction. 

The detour route for pedestrians and bicyclists during the closure is to use the paved trail on the east side of Martin Luther King Park, 42nd St. and 2nd Ave. S.

We need to keep this bridge closed for so long for a couple reasons:

  • The bridge is being completely reconstructed and with all the construction activities taking place on I-35W for the remainder of the project, highway lanes will be reduced and shifted at various times.
  • Construction of the new bridge piers cannot begin until several stages of temporary traffic lanes on I-35W are completed below the bridge.

The 40th St. bridge will remain closed to pedestrians and bicyclists through fall 2020. 

As always during constructions season, remember to plan ahead, allow for extra travel time, and consider alternative routes and ways to get around!  

      Update on bridge, ramp and road openings

      We are working quickly and efficiently to reopen some of the bridges, ramps and roads. Here is an update on openings:

      Already open

      • The ramp from westbound I-94 to 11th St. into downtown Minneapolis has reopened. 
      • 5th Ave. S ramp to eastbound I-94 is open (access to northbound I-35W remains closed until fall 2021)
      • 5th Ave. S between 25th St. and 19th St. opened to one lane of traffic
      • Franklin Ave. bridge: All lanes and sidewalks fully open

      Opening soon

      • The newly reconstructed 38th St. bridge is scheduled to reopen Fri, Aug. 3. The bridge has been closed since early March of this year. We’re still working on getting the traffic lights installed, so when the bridge opens on Friday, there will be a four-way stop at the intersection of 38th St. and Stevens Ave. for about a week. Utility work at the intersections of 39th St./Stevens Ave. and 39th St./2nd Ave. will continue through fall 2018. 
      • 2nd Ave. between Lake St. and 29th St. opens in mid-August

            Join us! Coffee with the Contractor: Aug. 9

            On Thu, Aug. 9, the project is hosting another Coffee with the Contractor event!

            Coffee with the Contractor will be at Boiler Room Coffee, 1830 3rd Ave. S in Minneapolis from 7 to 9 a.m.

            The event is an opportunity for residents and local business owners to get all your project questions answered by the 35W@94 project staff and hear about upcoming construction activities that will impact access to local roads.
