In this update

We have several upcoming closures that will impact travel in and near I-35W and I-94. Stay updated, plan ahead and consider alternative routes and ways to get around.

Also, since summer has arrived, you will start seeing crews working more at night throughout the project area. Working at night allows crews to do activities that would be difficult when there is a lot of traffic on the roads.

Closures

  • I-35W weekend closure June 15-18
  • Southbound I-35W to 35th St. ramp closes June 15
  • 24th St. pedestrian bridge closes June 15
  • I-35W and I-94 lane reductions begin June 18

Details on these closures are provided below.

I-35W weekend closure June 15-18

A weekend closure of I-35W is required to demolish the 24th St. pedestrian bridge, move barriers and restripe the road. Beginning 10 p.m. Fri, June 15, both directions of I-35W between I-94 and Hwy 62 will close. Southbound lanes will be open between 46th St. and Hwy 62. Crews will be working 24 hours a day during the weekend closure. Motorists should follow the posted detour of Hwy 62, Hwy 100 and I-394.

I-35W will reopen by 5 a.m. Mon, June 18.

Southbound I-35W to 35th St. ramp closes June 15

The ramp from southbound I-35W to 35th St. is scheduled to close to motorists on Friday, June 15 and remain closed through fall 2020. The detour is to continue on I-35W and take the 46th St. exit to Nicollet Ave.

The ramp will be closed through fall 2020. The long-term ramp closure is needed because of all the construction activities taking place on I-35W for the remainder of the project. Highway lanes will be reduced and shifted at various times which will make access to the ramp difficult.

24th St. pedestrian bridge closes June 15

The 24th St. pedestrian bridge is scheduled to close on Fri, June 15.  The detour is 5th Ave. to 28th St. to 3rd Ave

The 24th St. pedestrian bridge will remain closed through fall 2021.

We need to keep this bridge closed for this length of time for a couple reasons:

    • The bridge is being completely reconstructed and with all the construction activities taking place on I-35W for the remainder of the project, highway lanes will be reduced and shifted at various times.
    • Construction of the new bridge piers cannot begin until several stages of temporary traffic lanes on I-35W are completed below the bridge. Once the bridge is complete, it will be handicapped accessible and will be less steep to cross.

I-35W and I-94 lane reductions begin June 18

Beginning on Mon, June 18, lanes will be reduced on I-35W between downtown Minneapolis and 43rd St. to allow for areas of the highway to be reconstructed. There will be three lanes in the northbound direction, one of which will be a MnPASS lane, and two lanes in the southbound direction.

The lane reductions on I-35W will remain in place through fall 2021.

Also, westbound I-94 between Chicago Ave. and Nicollet Ave. will be reduced to two lanes starting on Mon, June 18 through fall 2018.
