Road closure details

After several false starts and construction delays, Hwy 95 south of downtown Stillwater will be closed for approximately three weeks beginning early Mon, June 11. The roadway will close between Hwy 36 and Nelson St. to install new drainage structures beneath the highway near the Oasis Café to improve storm water runoff.

Weather permitting, the highway will reopen by Mon, July 2nd.

During the closure, you’ll need to follow a signed detour to reach your destination.

  • Downtown Historic Stillwater from Hwy 36 Detour: North on Co. Rd. 15 (Manning Ave.), east on 75th St. (Co. Rd. 12). 75th St. becomes Myrtle Ave. as it nears downtown Stillwater.
  • Hwy 95 north of Stillwater from Hwy 36 Detour: North on Co. Rd. 15 (Manning Ave.), east on Hwy 96 to Hwy 95 north of Stillwater.
  • View the Detour Map (PDF)

Note: Access will be maintained at all times to the Oasis Café and St. Croix Boat and Packet from downtown Stillwater on southbound Hwy 95. Hwy 95 just north of Hwy 36 will remain open to Sunnyside Marina ONLY.

Please stay out of Upper Loop Trail construction area!

If you are hiking and enjoying the scenery around the city of Stillwater and the new St. Croix Crossing, we’d like to remind you to stay out of the construction area that is clearly marked south of downtown Stillwater. As an active construction zone, there are a large number of construction vehicles working along the roadway and hillside on the east side of Hwy 95 which pose a risk to anyone who wanders through the work area. In addition, anyone who does not belong in the area could be cited for trespassing. Your cooperation is appreciated to keep everyone safe during construction.

The new parking lot along Hwy 95 opened to traffic last week and is a good starting point for trips south to the new bridge (but not north into the downtown area). Parking in downtown Stillwater allows access to the northern end of the loop trail. And the loop trail will be fully open to pedestrians and bicyclists in September 2018.

More about this project

The work on Hwy 95 will consist of constructing the Upper Loop Trail portion in Minnesota. Construction will include adding new drainage structures beneath Hwy 95 near the Oasis Café which will require a three week full closure sometime in early May (stay tuned for more information) and completing landscaping stemming from the St. Croix Crossing project.
