Project work updates

We have a few project work activities to cover in this update:

  • Upcoming weekend closure of both directions of I-94 from I-394 to I-35W
  • Upcoming weekend closure of Hennepin Ave/Lyndale Ave. from Dunwoody Blvd. to Oak Grove St.
  • Westbound I-94 to Hwy 55 ramp closure begins Fri, May 4
  • Additional weekend closures of both directions of I-94 May 11 and May 18

Details for each closure can be found below. The closures are needed to repair and paint the Irene Hixon Whitney Bridge, the pedestrian bridge over I-94 between the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden and Loring Park.  Restoring the bridge’s wooden deck will continue into August.

Weekend full closure of I-94 May 4-7

Beginning 10 p.m. Fri, May 4, both directions of I-94 between I-394 and I-35W is scheduled to close. Motorists can follow posted detours: 

  • WB I-94 Detour from I-94: NB Hwy 280 to NB I-35W to WB I-694
  • WB I-94 Detour from SB I-35W: SB I-35W to WB Hwy 62 to NB Hwy 100 to EB I-694 to East River Road loops
  • WB I-94 Detour from NB I-35W: NB I-35W to WB I-694

Weekend closure of Hennepin Ave/Lyndale Ave. May 4-7

Beginning 10 p.m. Fri, May 4, Hennepin Ave./Lyndale Ave. between Dunwoody Blvd. and Oak Grove St., near Loring Park, will be closed. Motorists can follow posted detours: 

  • NB Hennepin Ave/Lyndale Ave. Detour: EB Franklin Ave. to NB 1st Ave. S to Marquette Ave.; left onto 11th St. S to Hennepin Ave., or continue on 11th St. S to Glenwood Ave. to Lyndale Ave.
  • SB Hennepin Ave/Lyndale Ave. Detour: Left on Hennepin Ave.; right on 12th St. S; right on LaSalle Ave. to WB Franklin Ave. to Lyndale Ave., or continue on Franklin Ave. to Hennepin Ave.

The road will reopen by 5 a.m. Mon, May 7

Westbound I-94 ramp to Hwy 55 closes May 4

The ramp from westbound I-94 to Hwy 55 closes on Fri, May 4 to complete bridge repair work. The detour is westbound I-394 to northbound Hwy 100. The ramp will remain closed through early June 2018.

Additional weekend closures of I-94 and Hennepin Ave/Lyndale Ave.

To continue repairs and painting of the Whitney Bridge, two additional weekend closures for the same stretch of I-94 and Hennepin Ave./Lyndale Ave. are scheduled for May 11-14 and May 18-21. 

More about this project

This project work is part of a two-year maintenance and restoration project for a nine-mile stretch of I-94 between Nicollet Ave. in Minneapolis and Shingle Creek Pkwy in Brooklyn Center. In 2017, MnDOT resurfaced nine miles of freeway and repaired almost 50 bridges and the Lowry Tunnel. 2018 is the second and final year of the project.

2018 construction activities include:

  • Repairs to two highway bridges
  • Repairs to the Irene Hixon Whitney Bridge, the pedestrian bridge over I-94 between Loring Park and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
