Weekly Stream Conditions
Creel Clerk Reports
Lower Shore (Lester to Stewart rivers)
Fishing pressure was moderate this week with two rain events elevating river levels and creating challenging fishing conditions. After 2 inches of rain on April 23, the Knife River went from 370 to 4,690 CFS in only 7 hours! Water levels have gradually declined, and clarity has improved in recent days. Water temperatures have ranged from 40-42 degrees in the mornings to 44-48 degrees in the afternoons. Steelhead have been observed jumping falls during the warmer afternoon periods. Catch rates have improved as the conditions of the river have cleared. Clipped steelhead were reported caught in all lower shore rivers. Several White Suckers were caught in the Lester River. Overall, fishing success has been better than expected after recent rainfall, with conditions improving, catch rates should improve over the weekend.
Middle Shore (Silver Creek to Baptism River)
Recent rainfall resulted in (super) high river levels across middle shore, though flows are now receding. Most rivers remain slightly turbid to turbid, except the Baptism River which has relatively clear water. Water temperatures have ranged between 38–42°F. Anglers have had limited success so far, with only a few steelhead caught. Fishing should improve as river levels drop and water temperatures increase over the weekend and into next week.
Upper Shore (Cross to Brule rivers)
Upper shore rivers were very high this week following two significant rain events that caused flooding. The larger rivers were muddy and nearly unfishable. The Brule and Cascade rose over their banks and flooded some trails. Water temperatures ranged from 30-48°F. Angling pressure was light and most anglers were fishing smaller rivers. A few smaller steelhead (around 20 inches) were reported caught this week, but overall catch reports were limited. Fishing should improve as river levels continue to drop and water temperatures increase over the next week.
