In January, the Minnesota DNR restarted the Lake Superior Fisheries Input Group monthly meetings to discuss updating the 2016 Fisheries Management Plan for the Minnesota Waters of Lake Superior. The process began in April 2025 with a day long kickoff conference in Duluth where MNDNR staff from the Lake Superior Fisheries Office and State, Tribal, and Federal partners from around Lake Superior presented information on the status of the Lake Superior fishery as well as work accomplished since 2016.
The Lake Superior Fisheries Input Group was formed and initially met in August 2025 to make introductions, discuss various Rules and Statutes, and set a future meeting schedule. The Input Group requested to begin monthly meetings in January 2026 so the fall could be dedicated to hunting and fishing which all agreed was preferred. The Input Group met again in January to discuss lake and tributary habitat issues and in February to discuss Brook Trout and to review the work MNDNR has accomplished since 2016 regarding Brook Trout research and management.
Future meeting topics include steelhead, lake trout and salmon, commercial, sport, and charter fishing as well as a meeting to review and discuss the draft updated management plan which will be available in Fall 2026. If you have any questions or comments, please contact MNDNR Lake Superior Fisheries Supervisor, Cory Goldsworthy, at cory.goldsworthy@state.mn.us or 218-302-3268.
