Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Surface water temps ranged from 56-60 °F. Anglers found success trolling from 100-130 feet down. The thermocline was typically 110-120 feet down. Green and wonder bread spoons, green and pearl flasher flies, and cowbells were particularly effective this week. Fishing was good for 18-28 inch Lake Trout. No salmon of any species were reported this week. Numbers of Pink Salmon observed in the Knife River Fish Trap declined substantially over the week. This is the last weekend of the Lake Trout fishing season until it reopens on December 1st.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Surface water temps were 57-59 °F. Lake Trout fishing was good from all stations and most were 22-28 inches long. While some Lake Trout moved closer to shallower shoreline structure, most were in 80-150 feet of water. Most successful anglers trolled brightly colored spoons, on downriggers, near bottom structure. Anglers that presented lures in the upper part of the water column and near to the surface did not catch many fish. Pink Salmon were still present in all the larger tributaries in low numbers. They were showing signs of wear with eroding fins and tails as their spawning run (and lives) come to an end.
In the Great Lakes, it’s Great to be Lake Superior
In the Great Lakes, it’s good to be deep, cold, relatively unproductive, and native fish species dominant (e.g., Lake Trout, Cisco, Lake Whitefish) like Lake Superior is. The ecosystem changes brought on by Quagga and Zebra mussels in Lakes Huron and Michigan in the past 20 years have been dramatic and as a result, Lake Whitefish numbers are rapidly declining. Lake Superior’s cold water and lack of calcium seem to inhibit invasive mussel population growth, but warming temperatures may change that.
