Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Surface water temps ranged from 56-60 °F. Anglers found success trolling 140-230 feet down. White, chartreuse, and silver flashers with small green or white flies were hot this week. Green, purple, and chrome spoons were also effective. All of the fish reported were Lake Trout or Siscowet that were 18-22 inches. Good numbers of Siscowet were caught this week likely due to anglers running lures deeper in search of fish. Some anglers were successful jigging over structure 50-70 feet down. No reports of Coho or Chinook Salmon were received. A few anglers also got into good numbers of Walleye while trolling deep for Lake Trout. Small Pink Salmon showed up in the Knife River Fish Trap this week and they are likely present in many of the other rivers along the Lower Shore.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Surface water temps were 56-58 °F. Lake Trout fishing near Tac Harbor and Grand Marais was good this week. Lake Trout were primarily in deeper water and >100 feet below the surface. Downriggers with bright colored spoons of chartreuse and orange were particularly effective. No reports of Coho or Chinook Salmon were received. Pink Salmon were observed in the Cross, Temperance, Cascade and Brule rivers. Although present they were few in number and very small in size. Rivers had moderate flows along the Upper Shore making them difficult to spot.
Invasive Mussels in Lake Superior
Lake Superior is the lone holdout in a mussel invasion that has overtaken every other Great Lake, a salvation credited to low calcium levels that stymie mussels’ efforts to build shells, cold water that hinders their reproduction, and relative isolation, which limits the boat traffic that spreads invasive species.
But a spate of recent outbreaks, from Isle Royale to Canada’s Nipigon Bay, are testing old assumptions about the lake’s defenses and leaving scientists with an uneasy feeling.
“We’re insulated, but we’re not immune.”
