Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Surface water temps were 56-62 °F. Anglers found success running green, orange, pink, or gold colored spoons as well as white or green flasher flies 50-130 feet down. Fishing in colder water away from shore helped improve catch rates. The thermocline varied depending on the day and was not well stratified on some days thanks to variable weather conditions. Most of the Lake Trout reported were in the 2-3 pound range, along with a few 5-7 pound fish. Several small Chinook Salmon were also caught this past week, but not in numbers. No reports of Pink or Coho Salmon were received.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Surface water temps were in the high 50’s this week. With warmer water temps fishing success for Lake Trout improved. Lake Trout were reported in deep near shore water close to bottom structure. Anglers found good numbers of 24-30 inch fish, with a few up to 20 pounds reported. Glow spoons and downriggers have been effective in targeting these fish, but vertical jigging for them with electronics was also effective. River levels were fairly high along the Upper Shore and some anglers reported observing a few Pink Salmon in the Temperance, Cascade, and Brule Rivers.
Management Updates
Lake Superior is the lone holdout in a mussel invasion that has overtaken every other Great Lake, a salvation credited to low calcium levels that stymie mussels’ efforts to build shells, cold water that hinders their reproduction, and relative isolation, which limits the boat traffic that spreads invasive species.
But a spate of recent outbreaks, from Isle Royale to Canada’s Nipigon Bay, are testing old assumptions about the lake’s defenses and leaving scientists with an uneasy feeling.
“We’re insulated, but we’re not immune.”
