Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Surface water temps were highly variable from 38-60 °F this week. Anglers found success for Lake Trout trolling green, chartreuse, and purple spoons 45-80 feet down. Some anglers also did well jigging near bottom structure in 100+ feet of water. Most of the Lake Trout caught were 4-7 pounds. The occasional nice Coho Salmon was reported, but no patterns were observed and no anglers caught more than 1 or 2 at a time. A few Pink Salmon were caught and were starting to show their fall colors. Low numbers of Pinks caught in the lake typically translates to smaller fall runs.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Surface water temps tanked after strong westerly winds blew, dropping water temps from the low 60’s to the high 30’s. In the last few days temps warmed back into the mid 40’s. The drastic cooling slowed fishing and Lake Trout were difficult to locate on electronics and even more difficult to catch. The Lake Trout that did bite were 24-28 inches, but were few and far between with no consistency to the depth or location where they were caught. No reports of Chinook or Coho Salmon were received. Anglers reported catching a few Pink Salmon in the mouths of the Temperance, Cascade, and Brule Rivers, but none were caught or observed upstream yet.
Invasive Mussels and Lake Superior
Lake Superior is the lone holdout in a mussel invasion that has overtaken every other Great Lake, a salvation credited to low calcium levels that stymie mussels’ efforts to build shells, cold water that hinders their reproduction, and relative isolation, which limits the boat traffic that spreads invasive species.
But a spate of recent outbreaks, from Isle Royale to Canada’s Nipigon Bay, are testing old assumptions about the lake’s defenses and leaving scientists with an uneasy feeling.
“We’re insulated, but we’re not immune.”
