Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Surface water temps were 59-63 °F and the thermocline was reported at around 100 feet down. Anglers found success trolling 80-110 feet down for Lake Trout, and 45-65 feet for Coho Salmon. Chrome, blue, or green spoons and pearly green flasher flies were particularly effective. Most of the Lake trout were 2-6 pounds and the Cohos were all around 3 pounds. Anglers caught a few Pink Salmon near river mouths that were staging for their fall run.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Surface water temps were in the 50’s along the Upper Shore. Lake Trout fishing improved at all stations and anglers did best in 80-180 feet of water close to bottom structure. Spoons and flasher flies in a variety of colors were effective. The average size of Lake Trout has been increasing over the past few weeks as has the number of Siscowet Lake Trout anglers are catching. Very few Coho or Chinook Salmon were caught from any location. A few Pink Salmon were reported and had started to change color and shape and were beginning to stage near river mouths. Angler pressure was moderate from all stations during the holiday weekend.
Lake Superior and Invasive Mussels
Lake Superior is the lone holdout in a mussel invasion that has overtaken every other Great Lake, a salvation credited to low calcium levels that stymie mussels’ efforts to build shells, cold water that hinders their reproduction, and relative isolation, which limits the boat traffic that spreads invasive species.
But a spate of recent outbreaks, from Isle Royale to Canada’s Nipigon Bay, are testing old assumptions about the lake’s defenses and leaving scientists with an uneasy feeling.
“We’re insulated, but we’re not immune.”
