Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Surface water temps were 58-65 °F near Duluth. Anglers did well for Lake Trout in deeper water tolling colorful spoons, 40-90 feet down, on down riggers. They also found success for Coho Salmon running orange or pink flasher flies 20-30 feet down. Further north, surface water temps were 55-61 °F. Most anglers ran lures anywhere from 20-80 feet down in 90-200 feet of water. Green, blue, and orange flasher flies as well as Wonder Bread, watermelon, purple, and blue spoons all did well. Although the average size of Lakers was similar to last week some larger fish are starting to show up.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Surface water temps were in the low to mid 50’s but winds disrupted this warm water and brought it down to the upper 30’s at times. Lake Trout were scattered in the water column with some anglers catching them very near the surface while others were from deep water and far down in the water column. Lake Trout were mostly smaller fish in the 16-20 inch range with the occasional larger fish. Reports of smaller Lake Trout moving into shallow waters were received presenting increased opportunity for shore anglers and small boat anglers in the coming weeks. Chinook and Coho salmon were reported again this week but only a few and they were widely scattered. Coho Salmon were all 17-20 inches. Anglers reported a few Pink Salmon from most stations and they were 14-16 inches. Shore anglers also reported catching fair numbers of Brook Trout in Grand Marais and Silver Bay.
