Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Surface water temps were 55-65 °F near Duluth and as low as 50 °F further up the shore. Anglers fishing from Duluth to McQuade found success trolling spoons, flasher flies, and stick baits 15-80 feet down. Anglers reported catching fish on almost every color including orange, green, yellow, white, and purple. Further north of McQuade Lake Trout were caught trolling 20-65 feet down and Coho Salmon 10-20 feet down. Reports of Chinook Salmon were scarce, but anglers reported a few nice fish. Color did not seem to be a big factor in success. No anglers were observed fishing the St. Louis River Estuary this week.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Surface water temps were 48-58 °F this week. Although some anglers found limited success jigging deep water for Lake Trout, other anglers switched to trolling spoons and flasher fly rigs in the top 100 feet of the water column and found more success doing so. Most Lakers were 17-24 inches with a few as large as 30 inches. The larger fish were typically found suspended high in the water column over deep water. A few 17-20 inch Coho Salmon were reported for the first time this week as well as some larger Chinook Salmon. Most were caught near the surface using pink or purple spoon and flasher combos. A few small Steelhead were reported from Grand Marais and Silver Bay, typically only about 20 inches long. Angler pressure was light during this reporting period, likely held down by poor weather conditions.
