Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Surface water temps were 51-53 °F near Duluth. The surface bite was good this week for Lake Trout and Coho Salmon fishing 10-15 feet down using brightly colored stickbaits and flasher/fly rigs. Fishing the edges of the stained river water can be productive this time of the year. Closer to Two Harbors surface water temps were 36-41 °F and fishing was slower. Jigging in deeper water and trolling in shallower produced a few fish. Walleye fishing on the St. Louis River Estuary was good again this week and many anglers reported catching limits of fish in 4-8 feet of water on chartreuse, orange, or gold jigs and stickbaits.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Surface water temps were 34-36 °F at Grand Marais and Hovland up to 41 °F at Twin Points. Anglers from all locations reported slow fishing, even in traditionally consistent deep water areas, ever since a strong storm front blew through the Middle and Upper Shores last week. Anglers were targeting Lake Trout in deep water, from 120-200 feet deep and used a variety of methods including jigging and trolling. Downriggers with brightly colored spoons, like white and glow were the most popular and produced a few fish. No reports of Salmon were received over the week which is typical for this time of the year given the water temps. Angler pressure was light at all Upper Shore stations.
Management Update
Lake Trout fishing has been very good in recent years, with the highest catch rates on record observed in 2024! Lake Trout populations have been doing so well, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission’s Lake Superior Committee recently declared Lake Trout rehabilitated to pre-1940 levels. All indicators point towards healthy Lake Trout populations into the future despite above-target Sea Lamprey abundance the past few years. The outlook for another awesome summer of fishing on Lake Superior is great!
