Creel Clerk Reports
Lower Shore (Lester to Stewart rivers)
Angler pressure and catch were low on lower shore tributaries this week. Stream temperatures dropped this week following light rain on May 16, but water levels stayed low and clear. Spawning activity continues in most lower shore rivers, but many have dropped back to Lake Superior, and a few small brook trout were also reported. The steelhead season appears to be coming to an end on the lower shore.
Middle Shore (Silver Creek to Baptism River)
Cooler air temperatures and light rain helped stabilize river temperatures and flows on the middle shore this period, possibly extending the steelhead fishing window. However, angler pressure remained very light. Steelhead were still being caught in modest numbers, and reports of brook trout and sucker catches have increased.
Thank you to all the anglers on the middle north shore for another great season. Your participation and shared information are greatly appreciated. Wishing you a summer full of good fishing!
Upper Shore (Cross to Brule rivers)
Angler pressure has been light during this period. Recent rainfall and cool nighttime temperatures have lowered water temps on upper shore tributaries, with recent averages in the 50–55°F range. Anglers continue to catch steelhead in upper shore rivers. Small tributaries are dropping fast, running clear and near low levels, while larger rivers still have moderate flow and good conditions. Anglers are reporting more brook trout in both rivers and river mouths. While no trophy-sized fish have been confirmed, a few around 16 inches have been mentioned, along with fair numbers of smaller brook trout. Larger rivers are holding fair numbers of suckers.
