Creel Clerk Reports
Lower Shore (Lester to Stewart rivers)
Angling pressure has been moderate this past week. River flows spiked after last week’s rain but have steadily dropped, creating ideal conditions for steelhead fishing. More rain in the weekend forecast could raise water levels again and bring in new fish. Cold nights have kept water temps mostly in the upper 30s to low 40s, with a few rivers briefly reaching the mid-40s last weekend before cooling off again. Catch has improved in recent days at many lower shore rivers, and many clipped steelhead have been caught and harvested this week. Smelt have been caught recently at Lester River and Park Point.
Middle Shore (Silver Creek to Baptism River)
Angling pressure has increased significantly on middle shore streams this creel period. Anglers are catching chrome bright steelhead in recent days. Water temperatures remain cold, mostly in the mid to upper 30s. Recent rain and snowmelt have raised water levels. Shelf ice is mostly gone, but trails are very muddy.
Upper Shore (Cross to Brule rivers)
Angling pressure has been light across upper shore tributaries. Fishing has been slow west of Grand Marais, and very few fish have been reported caught over the past week. River temperatures remain cold, mostly in the mid to upper 30s. Despite recent rain and moderate, turbid flows, many rivers are still lined with heavy ice. Significant snowpack remains in the Arrowhead region, and inland lakes are still fully ice-covered and likely will be for several more weeks.
