Creel Clerk Reports
Lower Shore (Lester to Stewart rivers)
The steelhead run has started, and despite cooler temperatures and lingering ice, anglers are catching fish. Water levels are good across all lower shore rivers, but water temperatures remain cold, consistently in the mid to upper 30s. Angler reports have been mixed — some are finding good action with multiple hookups, while others are having slower days. Upcoming precipitation could bring more fish into the rivers, but snow and cold weather in the 10-day forecast, with overnight lows in the mid-30s, may delay the run. Angling pressure is expected to increase over the next week.
Middle Shore (Silver Creek to Baptism River)
Most of the ice has cleared from the middle shore streams. Water levels are high, and temperatures remain cold, in the low to mid-30s. Angler pressure is still very low, though a few anglers have started venturing upstream instead of just fishing into the lake. A few fish were reported caught early in the period. Most early season fishing has involved casting spoons and drowning nightcrawlers near river mouths. Angling pressure in rivers is expected to pick up over the next week.
Upper Shore (Cross to Brule rivers)
Heavy ice shelves are still in place on many upper shore streams. Light rain two days ago slightly raised river levels and submerged some ice, and warmer air temps briefly threatened to clear the rivers, but cool nights and dry weather have stalled the melt. Angler pressure remains very light, with ice limiting access to fishing spots and trails. A few anglers were seen fishing at river mouths, which are ice-free and look good. Water temperatures are still cold, holding in the low- to mid-30s.
